Mahindra Happinest is a township located in Kalyan. The site foresees one of the best transport networks and good connectivity and being on the outskirts of the city a refined network of open spaces too.

Landscape-led planning

The design drives on the principle of experiential landscapes. Revising the existing road network, the design opens the plot for permeable paved areas and minimum hardscape. We retained the existing vegetation and looked at the landscape solutions that maximized groundwater recharge, were low maintenance, and cost-effective.

Zones

We used the 22mt long site setback RG for greening. With a palm tree line, it set an interim foreground for the towering structures. The road section was altered for tactile stimulation and staggered feature walls allowing a barrier-free pedestrian movement.
The road network: It begins with entry experiences - fire vehicle movement area, and the vehicular spine. Complete vehicular movement is re-aligned and minimized. It is lined with seasonally flowering trees and a fragrance garden. The waiting plaza leads to adjoining courtyards. The fire tender movement paths are utilized for floor activities and flexible furniture.

Accessible greens

We tucked our active zone in a ‘forest’ with adventure sports, kids play, medicinal tree walks, fruit orchards, sandpit and rammed earth zones, cycle sports, box cricket, and amphitheater. The multi-level car park minimizes ground space for parking, providing a bonus terrace level open space. Utilized completely for sports areas, the terrace minimizes the hardscape on the ground. The urban forest is an outcome of thoughtful planting, a strict choice of native plants, stratification strategies permitting barrier-free anthropogenic activities.

Sustenance building

We looked at maximizing permeable floor finishes and softscape to facilitate groundwater recharge. A revised road network allows for high walkability, tactile stimulation, and reduction of nonpermeable surfaces. More than 1000 trees are planted leading to the creation of urban forests and the usability of the green area. For imbibing a socio-cultural responsibility towards the environment one tree per family now forms the USP for the landscape proposal.

Common places

We believe without common land no social system can survive. Happinest possesses a hierarchy of landscaped common lands. The common land serves two specific functions. First, the land makes it possible for people to feel comfortable and therefore allows people to feel connected to larger ecosystems. And second, common land acts as a meeting place for people, hence developing social systems. Open public greens are located within a three minutes' walk of every house and workplace. They are uniformly scattered throughout the township.
